Re: Emphasizing accessibility on International Day of Persons with disabilities at Stadium-Chinatown SkyTrain station
Dear Mayor Ken Sim and Council,
On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and in alignment with the City of Vancouver’s recently adopted Accessibility Strategy, I wish to bring to your attention the current accessibility challenges at the Stadium-Chinatown SkyTrain station.
As the city’s strategy emphasizes the importance of inclusive services, programs, and infrastructure, and the removal of barriers to accessibility, it is crucial to address the potential issues that could arise from the unavailability of the Costco elevator at this station.
In the first quarter of 2023 alone, the SkyTrain’s Expo and Millennium lines accommodated a combined ridership of over 23.4 million passengers, a clear indication of the importance of ensuring accessibility for all. The city’s commitment, as reflected in its Accessibility Strategy adopted on July 19, 2022, underscores the need for a proactive approach to ensure that our public transportation system is fully accessible to all individuals, including those with disabilities.
To uphold the city’s dedication to accessibility and inclusivity, I propose the following measures:
- The development of a long-term plan to install an escalator or additional elevator at the lower entrance of the Stadium-Chinatown station, offering a crucial alternative access point.
- The prioritization of maintenance and timely reopening of all station entrances, focusing on those providing step-free access.
- Enhanced communication regarding accessible routes, especially during maintenance or service disruptions.
These steps align with the city’s vision and strategy for accessibility and will contribute significantly to the quality of life for many Vancouver residents and visitors, particularly those with disabilities.
I appreciate your consideration of these suggestions and look forward to seeing them implemented, reflecting our shared values of inclusivity and accessibility.
Sincerely,
Gareth Jones
